Viewing Totality in Toledo!

In the vast tapestry of cosmic events, few experiences rival the awe-inspiring grandeur of a total solar eclipse. On April 8, 2024, Toledo, Ohio, finds itself perfectly positioned to witness nature's most captivating celestial performance.

VIEWING TOTALITY

Experiencing a total solar eclipse is like stepping into another realm—a transient moment where the laws of nature momentarily blur, and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. As the moon delicately aligns itself between the Earth and the sun, a hush falls over the landscape.

But it's not just the visual spectacle that captivates the senses. There's a palpable sense of anticipation and excitement in the air, shared among fellow observers who have gathered from far and wide to bear witness to this cosmic event. As the moon's shadow races across America, from Texas to Maine, engulfing everything in its path in a fleeting darkness, time seems to stand still.

And then, as quickly as it began, the eclipse draws to a close. The sun emerges from behind the moon, bathing the world in light once more. But the memory of those fleeting moments—the sight of the sun's corona, the feeling of being a part of something greater than oneself—lingers long after the eclipse has passed.

In Toledo the partial eclipse will begin at 1:56 p.m. EDT and the total eclipse begins at 3:13 p.m. EDT. Start times and duration will differ depending on where within Toledo you choose to be. The duration will likely be somewhere around 1 minute and 47 seconds and the partial eclipse will end at 4:26 p.m.

SAFETY TIPS

Get your eclipse glasses early! Several of Toledo's attractions will have approved glasses for viewing the event safely.

1. Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Before April 8, it's important to check your glasses to ensure there are no holes or scratches on the lens. You should also check the lens by shining a flashlight through them. If you see any light shining through, make sure to get new glasses before the eclipse.

2. Even during a partial or annular eclipse, or during the partial phases of a total eclipse, the Sun will still be very bright. If you are watching an entire eclipse, you may be in direct sunlight for hours. Remember to wear sunscreen, a hat, and protective clothing to prevent skin damage.

3. Plan ahead. If you choose to stay in a hotel, be aware that most will sell out.

4. Get to your destination early and try to spend eclipse night at or near your viewing location. Expect the highways and freeways to be extra busy in the aftermath of totality, and consider staying an additional day to avoid delays.

5. Plan for and expect travel delays on eclipse day. Fill up your gas tank, bring food and water, and plan accordingly for commuting on highways or on local roadways.
